Social StudiesThis month, scholars will continue their learning of key concepts from Ancient Greece. Mid-month, they focus their learning on Ancient Rome. Scholars will receive an overview of the key figures, historical conflicts, innovations, and the social structure that define Rome as a republic and empire. They are building upon their prior knowledge of the 7 characteristics that build and maintain a civilization, as well as the milestones developed by the ancient Greeks. Scholars will participate in an interdisciplinary mini-unit with language arts involving Pompeii. They will also complete their next IB unit task of creating a Roman Emperor Time Capsule. The class will continue to investigate how civilizations yearn for power and what that looks like in Rome and what ideas were improved upon from prior civilizations they have studied so far. Why do empires epand and what are the results of their expansion? The IB theme for this unit is: Global interactions and demand for sustainability results in acquisition of new territories which leads to conflict and compromise. All scholars should be familiar with this statement. The planned progress and some of the content taught in this unit includes: The rise of the Roman Republic, the evolution of the Roman Empire from a republic, Julius Caesar and Augustus, inventions such as sewers, roads, aqueducts, gladiators, and government systems, the Punic Wars, plebeians vs. patricians, and the role of the Roman Catholic Church/the Pope as an governmental authority. They will also be introduced to major world religions and learn about their foundations. Religions include Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism. By the beginning of March, scholars will begin their investigation into why empires collapse and the 4 attributes that lead to collapse: military, political, economic, and social. The interim test in February will focus only on the Greeks.
