6th grade is beginning their interdisciplinary unit between science and ELA. All scholars should have purchased a copy of the young readers' edition of Hidden Figures by now. If not, please use the link on Mrs. Crismore's class website (crismoreclassroom.weebly.com) to purchase online. It is also available at the Book Fair until this Friday, 12/8, for $9.00. We will use this text in both classes to explore the development of scientific and societal innovations that led to American-manned space exploration and NASA's space missions. The unit will culminate with an IB task in January.
Social StudiesThe month of December is sure to be exciting! Scholars will study Ancient Greece. They will explore the geography of Greece, military conquests of Alexander the Great, the Trojan War, Peloponnesian Wars, conflict and differences between Athens and Sparta, mythology, the Olympics, and more. They are building upon their prior knowledge of the 7 characteristics that build and maintain a civilization. Scholars will do a team activity in class, as well as complete a Greece Newspaper as their performance task/project. Scholars will look at how civilizations yearn for power and what that looks like in Greece. Why do civilizations expand and what is the result of their expansion? Why do people need government? How do people get the things they want and need? What are the technological impacts on modern society from Ancient Greece? The IB theme for this unit is: Global interactions and demand for sustainability results in acquisition of new territories which leads to conflict and compromise. Scholars will begin their study of Ancient Rome after Winter Break, once they have studied democracy and how it failed in Greece. Scholars will take their second interim test before the break. It will cover Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, and Ancient India.
